A) Mast
Here
is an overview of the kayak mast variant that has a rotating base:
|
 |
This version of the kayak rig
has a rotating base which can be made of composites or cast from
aluminium. The operating strut at the back of the mast is straight
(not bent as in the case of the simple kayak mast) and locks into
the base when the rig is raised. The other components are the same
as those used in the simple kayak rig. |
 |
The mast base in this example
is cast from aluminium and consists of a flat disc with two vertical
plates that support the mast. The vertical plates are buttressed for
reinforcement. A central vertical tube (1.125" outside diameter,
aluminium) is fitted to the mast base and provides an axis of
rotation. |
 |
 |
A
plinth is constructed on the foredeck of the kayak to receive the
rotating mast base: |
 |
 |
 |
The mast base is retained in
its mounting by a metal ring (aluminium or stainless steel). All
moving surfaces are lubricated with grease. |
 |
|
Although the rotating mast
base will work effectively in direct contact with the plinth
provided there is lubrication, an alternative is to fit a slewing
bearing such as the one illustrated here. This consists of two
concentric rings with ball bearings in groove between them. (They
are also known as "Lazy Susan" bearings.) One ring is bolted to the
plinth, and the other to the mast base. |

Boom
The
boom for this rig is made in the same way as the one for the simple
kayak rig - for details please click
